As everyone is enjoying the new Kapiti Expressway thoughts are already turning to the next stages of roading improvements coming all the way North to Foxton.
Transmission Gully is the next big stage and work is now ramping up. Around 450 new staff are being recruited to help with this massive project which will link Kapiti with Porirua and Wellington cities.
Work on the Peka Peka to Otaki expressway also begins this year which will connect with the Kapiti Expressway. Judging by the long queues at the Ōtaki roundabout over Easter this can’t come soon enough.
I've had a lot of feedback from residents just North of Waikanae concerned about chip seal noise which is affecting around 50 households. I have talked to NZTA about this and I’m pleased they will now be applying asphalt this year which will greatly reduce the noise. I thank those local residents for their patience.
It's very pleasing to see that NZTA have again been very responsive to concerns of locals, following the decision to connect the new cycleway from the Kapiti cycleway further North to Otaki.
I've also received a loud and clear message from Peka Peka and Te Horo residents that they want a full interchange at Peka Peka.
At the moment North-bound motorists that miss the Te Moana off-ramp are forced to do a dangerous u-turn at Peka Peka. When the Otaki to Peka Peka section is compete it will mean about a 40km return journey if the offramp is missed at Te Moana Rd.
It makes sense to me and I'm in regular communication with NZTA and Kapiti Coast District Council to see if a solution can be found.
The NZ Transport Agency will also begin safety improvements work in a few months on State Highway 57 from Heatherlea East Road to Shannon.
This will see wider shoulders built in places, wider centrelines to provide greater separation between vehicles travelling in opposite directions and rumble strips to give distracted drivers a wake-up call.
All of these changes are going to give our region the best transport infrastructure we’ve ever had.
